Coordinated British-French Air Strike Targets Daesh Munitions Store in the Syrian region
Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.
UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."
During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
