Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty
The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
