Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
