Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.
The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the ability to question certain rulings made by the official, following the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
